The Centre for Internet and Society in collaboration with the Frontier Foundation is holding a three day Digital Natives workshop in Taipei from 15 to 17 August, 2010. The three day workshop will serve as an ideal platform for the young users of technology to share their knowledge and experience of the digital and Internet world and help them learn from each other’s individual experiences.

Everybody has a story to tell, and with the Internet, it is possible to tell the story and be heard. Young people around the world use digital technologies to find a voice, an expression, a creative output and a space for dialogue. Gone are the days when the young were only to be seen and not heard. In the Web 2. 0 world, the young are seen, heard and are making a dramatic change in the world that we live in.

As Internet and digital technologies become more widespread, the world is shrinking, time is replaced by Internet time, we are constantly connected and intricately linked to our contexts, our people, our cultures and our networks. And you, yes YOU are a part of this change. In fact, as Digital Natives – people who have found technologies as central to their lives – you are directly affecting the lives of many, sometimes even without knowing about it.

An Open Call for Participation The Centre for Internet and Society (Bangalore, India) in collaboration with the Frontier Foundation (Taipei, Taiwan) are calling out to young technology users to share stories about how they have tried to change things around them with the use of digital and Internet technologies. Conversely, if you feel that the presence of these technologies has significantly changed you in some way, we want to hear about that too! These can be stories where you have made a significant impact by initiating campaigns or movements for a particular cause, stories where you have used technologies to cope with problems in your personal and social life through your online persona in the virtual World Wide Web or stories where a small blog you started, or a Facebook group you created, or a plurk network that you started, or a discussion group that you participated in, led to a change that has a story to tell. The three day workshop will select 20 participants from all around Asia and in the Middle East to come and share these stories, to interact with facilitators and scholars who have worked in different countries and areas, and to form a network of collaboration and support. We will give your stories a face, a voice and a platform where they can be heard in your own voice, in your own style and in your own formats. Participants can fill in an application form (as given below) and forward it to digitalnatives@cis-india.org by 15th July 2010. Simultaneously a website will also be hosted online where the Digital Natives will contribute to the content. Selected participants will be encouraged to document in it. Expenses relevant to the project will be granted to the selected participants.

The NTIA has awarded $62.5+ million in stimulus funding to Internet2, NLR, Indiana University, the Northern Tier Network Consortium. Together with their vendor partners Ciena, Cisco, Infinera and Juniper Networks, the collaborators propose the construction of the United States Unified Community Anchor Network (U.S. UCAN), an advanced network that will link regional networks across the nation, including other projects funded through ARRA. U.S. UCAN’s advanced infrastructure will—in partnership with regional and state research and education networks—connect America’s community anchor institutions. For more info, http://www.usucan.org.

Funded by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) Broadband Technology Opportunities Program, the United States Unified Community Anchor Network (U.S. UCAN) will be a nationwide, coast-to-coast advanced network infrastructure that, together with state and regional network partners, will enable the connection of America’s community anchor institutions—schools, libraries, community colleges, health centers and public safety organizations—to support advanced applications not possible with today’s typical Internet service. U.S. UCAN fills a critical gap linking community anchor institutions together into a national, open network with next-generation capabilities, operated with end-to-end transparency and the highest levels of performance uniquely suited to the needs of these communities.

U.S.UCAN will provide a network environment capable of supporting life-changing applications such as telemedicine and distance learning for all community anchor institutions, including those in areas previously considered too remote or economically depressed to support advanced network services. Led by the same advanced networking community that has already connected 66,000 community anchors through partnerships across public and private sectors, U.S.UCAN will prepare Americans—now and in the future—to compete successfully in an increasingly competitive global economy.

The network will offer its services to community anchors nationwide through a new not-for-profit organization (also called U.S. UCAN), which will be directed and governed by a partnership of the research and education networking community and representatives of community anchor institutions.

NETTAB 2010 on "Biological Wikis"
November 29 – December 1, 2010, Naples, Italy
http://www.nettab.org/
CALL FOR PAPERS
See below for Topics, Contributions sought, Deadlines, Instructions and Committees.
RATIONALE
It is now clear that wiki systems offer a variety of advantages for the management of biological data and information.
Some of the specific aims of wikis for biology (bio-wikis) include:
 * Collaborative development and sharing of knowledge
 * Collaborative annotation of database contents
 * Collaborative creation of database contents
The collaborative development and sharing of documentation and knowledge allows communities to promote, exploit, discuss and reach consensus on procedures, data, experiences, news, and other varied information. Indeed valuable expertise and interests in special topics are usually distributed, and are rarely concentrated in a unique site or research group.
The collaborative annotation of biological databases is increasingly under consideration because extended and accurate curation of an ever increasing volume of data is extremely costly and time consuming. Such distributed networks can help to improve and extend databases curation beyond that which is possible with, typically, limited numbers of curation staff. It allows users to contribute their expertise and observations independently of database central organizations. Although the contents of the database are collaboratively annotated, the underlying databases themselves are left unchanged.
Furthermore, collaborative creation of community databases can capture emerging structure in rapidly developing fields. These database-wikis are indexes of biologically relevant data that emerge from focused and rapidly developing communities. They form a stopgap between unstructured discussion in fora and on mailing lists and the ‘mature’ databases that emerge subsequently. Hence they can be useful for discerning trends and promoting best practices, as well as collect unique and timely information.
In the future, collaborative ‘wiki’ updates of almost all database contents can be envisaged. However several important issues need to be addressed:
 * How reliable are user contributions?
 * What format should annotations take?
 * How is this information feed back into ‘authoritative’ databases?
Procedures should be implemented to support assessment of users’ contributions, extraction of structured data from annotations, uptake of original data into reference databases. The authoritativeness of contributions is essential: how can quality be assessed? How do we deal with contributions from casual end users, since these are usually not considered adequate when compared with professional annotation at service centers. Can the open edition model of many wiki systems, e.g. Wikipedia, be as successful in life sciences? Alternatively, should the usual criteria for assessing quality of research be applied, including peer-evaluation of contributions and identification of users? Crediting users for their contributions (e.g. authorship assignment) may be necessary to stimulate the broadest possible participation. Which further benefits may be imagined to acknowledge user investment (subscriptions to services, journals, …)?
Special features may be required to cater for the specificity of biological data: textual information is only a small part of biological data, how can the numerous and heterogeneous biological data types be catered for, e.g. images, plots, diagrams? An adaptation of current wiki systems is needed. A survey of existing systems as well as current development efforts will be useful, so that possible synergies can be identified and supported, as well as ensure a coherent set of interoperable biological wikis.
TOPICS
The following list is not meant to be exclusive of any further topics as stated above.
Submitted contributions should address one or more of the following topics:
